How to Activate Your Kenya Power Prepaid Meter

How to Successfully Update and Activate Your Kenya Power Prepaid Meter
Is your Kenya Power (KPLC) meter rejecting new tokens? Don’t panic—it’s not broken. KPLC is currently undergoing a mandatory nationwide system upgrade dubbed “Update Token Meter Yako.” This global “TID Rollover” ensures your prepaid meter remains secure and functional. Without this update, your meter will eventually stop accepting tokens entirely.
Here is your simple, step-by-step guide to activating your meter and getting your lights back on.

Step 1: Retrieve Your Reset and Update Codes
Before you can activate the upgrade, you need two unique 20-digit codes. KPLC usually sends these via SMS when you purchase a token. If you didn’t receive them, you can fetch them manually:
  • Dial *977# on your mobile phone.
  • Select Prepaid Services.
  • Select Update Token Meter.
  • Enter your Meter Number to receive the codes via SMS.
Step 2: Load Your Old Tokens First
This is the most critical step. You must key in all previously purchased tokens that are still sitting in your drawer or phone inbox. Once you start the upgrade process, the meter will no longer accept old, un-loaded tokens.
Step 3: Key in the Upgrade Codes
The activation process requires entering the two codes you received in a specific sequence:
  1. Enter Code 1 (Reset Code): Type the first 20-digit code into your meter keypad and press Enter/OK.
  2. Wait for Acceptance: The screen should display “Accept” or a similar success message.
  3. Enter Code 2 (Update Code): Type the second 20-digit code and press Enter/OK.
  4. Verification: Your meter is now updated and ready for the new era of electricity tokens.
Step 4: Load Your Newest Electricity Token
After the update codes have been accepted, you can finally enter the 20-digit token you just bought. Your meter should accept it instantly, restoring your power balance.

Common Troubleshooting Tips
  • “Reject” Message: If the meter rejects the codes, double-check that you entered them in the correct order (Reset Code first, then Update Code).
  • CIU Connectivity: If your keypad (CIU) isn’t communicating with the meter, ensure it is plugged directly into a wall socket or replace the batteries.
  • Need More Help? You can reach out to the KPLC National Contact Center by dialing 97771.
