How to Apply for Maisha Namba and Card
How to Apply for Maisha Namba (3rd Generation ID)
Applying for the Maisha Card is a hybrid process: you start the application and pay on eCitizen, then complete it in person for biometric capture. Your maisha card will have your maisha namba.
Documents you need for Maisha Namba
- First-Time Applicants (18+): Original and copy of Birth Certificate, copy of parents’ ID cards, and an academic certificate (KCPE/KCSE) to verify name spelling.
- Replacements/Upgrades: Your current 2nd-generation ID number (this remains your Maisha Namba).
- Fees: KSh 300 for first-time applicants or KSh 1,050 for replacements/duplicates.
What is Maisha Namba (UPI)
Maisha Namba is Kenya’s new Unique Personal Identifier (UPI), a lifelong digital identification number assigned to every citizen. It is designed to replace multiple registration numbers with a single, unified identifier that tracks an individual from birth to death.
The system consists of four main pillars:
- Maisha Namba (UPI): A 14-digit number assigned at birth (on the birth certificate) that later becomes your National ID number at age 18.
- Maisha Card: A third-generation smart ID card featuring a microprocessor chip with encrypted biometric data (fingerprints and photo) for enhanced security.
- Maisha Digital ID: A virtual version of the ID accessible via smartphones, allowing users to authenticate their identity for online government services without a physical card.
- Maisha Integrated Database: A centralized master register that links data from various agencies, including KRA (tax), NHIF (health), and NSSF (social security), to streamline service delivery.
Key Benefits of MAISHA NAMBA
- Unified Identity: Consolidates your KRA PIN, NHIF, and school registration (NEMIS) under one number.
- Efficiency: Eliminates the need for fresh mass registration (unlike the previous Huduma Namba) by leveraging existing databases.
- Security: Uses advanced encryption and polycarbonate materials to prevent forgery and identity theft
There are three distinct ways for one to get Maisha Namba at this piloting stage at birth, when acquiring a new ID or when replacing the old ID. Going forward maisha namba will be issued once at birth when applying your birth certificate.
