How to find your child’s CBA Number

How to Get Your Child’s Assessment Number for KPSEA and KJSEA Results

A CBE (Competency-Based Education) assessment number, often referred to as a CBA number, is a unique identification code assigned by KNEC to learners starting in Grade 3. It tracks their academic progress, school-based assessments (SBAs), and projects through to Grade 12.

What is Competency Based Assessment (CBA)? :It is a purposeful systematic continuous process of gathering information from multiple sources for making decisions on what learners know, needs to learn, has learned and can do. It involves creating opportunities for learners to apply the knowledge, skills attitudes and values they have learnt to solve real world problems.

Key Details About the Assessment Number:

  • Purpose: It is used to upload and view learner assessment results on the KNEC CBA portal.
  • Source: It is either a NEMIS number (Ministry of Education) or a specific assessment number generated by KNEC. KNEC also calls it UPI number
  • Usage: Teachers use this number to submit formative assessment records, while parents can use it to monitor progress.
  • Relevance: It is crucial for School-Based Assessments (SBA) and summative assessments, such as KPSEA

Finding your child’s CBA Assessment Number is essential because it is a unique identifier assigned in Grade 3 that follows them throughout their basic education.

Here is how you can locate it:

  1. Contact the School (Fastest Method)

The Assessment Number is auto-generated by the KNEC CBA portal once a learner is registered by their school.

  • Class Teacher/Headteacher: They have access to the School Nominal Roll, which lists every student alongside their Assessment Number.
  • Official Result Slips: Schools are required to print and issue signed copies of result slips (for Grade 6 KPSEA or Grade 9 KJSEA) to parents, which prominently display this number.
  1. Check Previous Assessment Reports

If you have any physical or digital copies of previous reports, the number will be listed there.

  • KPSEA/KJSEA Portals: If you previously checked results via the KPSEA or KJSEA portals, the number would have been used as your login credential.
  • SMS Records: If you checked results via SMS (sending a message to 22263), check your message history for the assessment number you sent.
  1. Use the KNEC CBA Portal “View Learner Details”

While you typically need the number to log in as a parent, you can use the portal to verify if a number you found is correct:

  • Visit the KNEC CBA Portal.
  • Click the “View Learner Details” button.
  • Select the child’s Grade/Level.
  • Enter the suspected number and click “Find” to see if your child’s name and details appear.

Although KNEC gives this as a procedure , they have not provided a way for parents to sign up.

Important Distinction: Assessment Number vs. UPI (NEMIS)

Do not confuse the Assessment Number with the UPI (Unique Personal Identifier):

  • Assessment Number: Used strictly for KNEC assessments and exams from Grade 3 onwards.
  • UPI: Used by the Ministry of Education in the NEMIS system for capitation (funding) and school tracking.

If your child is in Grade 3 or above and the school cannot provide an assessment number, they may not be registered on the KNEC system. You should immediately ask the headteacher to register them through the KNEC Registration Portal.
