How to Locate your KNEC Index Number

How to Find Your KNEC Index Number: A Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Losing or forgetting your KNEC index number can be a major hurdle when you need to check exam results, apply for university placement via KUCCPS, or request official certificates. Whether you are a recent candidate looking for KCPE or KCSE results or a parent tracking a learner’s progress through the CBA portal, having this unique identifier is essential.

This guide provides a straightforward roadmap to retrieving your KNEC index number through official channels, including the KNEC Portal, school-based records, and digital archives, ensuring you can access your academic records without delay.

  1. Visit Your Former School

This is the most reliable method. Every school maintains a Master Nominal Roll or a results printout for every year they presented candidates for national exams.

  • Regular Candidates: Contact the school principal or the exams office to check your details in their archives.
  • Private Candidates: If your examination centre was a private institution that has since closed, visit the Sub-County Director of Education office in the area where you sat for the exam to access the district’s records.
  1. Check Placement Portals (For KCSE Candidates)

If you sat for your KCSE recently, you may have used your index number to log into placement portals:

  • KUCCPS Portal: Log into the KUCCPS Student Portal using your Birth Certificate Number or KCPE Index Number as the initial password. Your KCSE index number is often displayed on your profile dashboard.
  • HELB Portal: If you applied for a student loan, your index number will be saved in your HELB account profile details.
  1. Contact KNEC Archives

You can reach out directly to the KNEC Archives and Records section for assistance in retrieving your index number from their database. Be prepared to provide your full name as it appeared in the exam and the year you sat for it.

  • Phone: 0720741004 or 0732333566
  • Email: archives@knec.ac.ke or info@knec.ac.ke
  • Physical Address: New Mitihani House, Popo Road, South C, Nairobi.
  1. Use the QMIS “Find” Feature

If you still remember the Year and Exam Type but are unsure of the exact index number, you can try variations on the QMIS Portal.

  • Once you enter a potential index number and click “Find,” the system will automatically display the registered name associated with that number if it exists in their records.

Note: For CBC students (Grade 3 and above), you can track progress using your Assessment Number via the KNEC CBA portal
