An example of a domain name is: www.how.co.ke
bertandrich.com is the domain name
com is the top level domain
bertandrich is a subdivision of com, and represents the second-level domain
www is a subdomain (also known as third-level domain or CNAME).

Country top level domain for Kenya is ke. You can therefore have your-domain.co.ke for example.

Third-level domains are also known as subdomains and CNAMEs. In a URL, the subdomain is written before the domain name. Here’s some examples:

www for www.how.co.ke
mail for mail.yahoo.com

Domain transfer

Domain transfer is the process of moving your domain management from one registrar to another. You may be decided to move your domain to a different registrar due to a variety of reasons including search for better service, attractive prices or extra addons.

To initiate the domain transfer process:

  1. Make sure that you can access domain administrator email. A confirmation email will be send to this email address, without which the domain transfer will not proceed.
  2. Back up your website and emails. If you have been using Outlook or Google Apps then your email address are safe.
  3. Get the domain authorization code from the current registrar. You can get this from the authorization code from the control panel.

Once you have gone through the three steps above, you can then give the transfer authorization code to your new registrar so that he/she can start the process.

Most registrars require that you pay for one year domain registration.

The domain transfer process takes about 7 days after you have responded to the authorization email.

Can one change a domain name?

Lets say your website is called bertandrich.com and you decide that br.com is better and you therefore want to change website name to br.com.

The solution to this scenario is to register the new domain name, and point traffic from the old domain name to the new domain.

This means that you cannot edit/change a domain name, you have to register another one and point the old domain to the new web address.
